Rules of Cages

Sky kennels

As of as April 11, 2005 KLM Cargo will only accept kennels that meet IATA-LAR requirement 1. The handling agent must check the use of the right type of kennel.

Kennels that do not meet IATA-LAR standards will be changed at Amsterdam

The sky kennels need to be made of plastic with a built-in iron door (plastic doors are not permitted). Door hinges and locking pins must extend beyond the horizontal extrusions above and below the door openings by at least 1.6 cm (5/8 in). VERY IMPORTANT! The top and bottom of the cage must be reunited at all 4 corners using nuts and bolts or heavy tie wrap. The total ventilated area must be at least 16% of the total surface of the four sides. The provision of additional holes on the roof or sides of the container or larger mesh covered holes in order to increase the ventilation are permitted.

Each animal contained in the container must have enough space to turn about normally while standing, to stand and sit erect, and to lie in a natural position.

Water container must be present within the container with outside access for filling. Food container must be present either within the container or attached to it use in the cases of delay.

Wooden kennels that meet the IATA-LAR requirements can be accepted at AMS, JNB, CPT and DXB. For all other stations, it`s required to send a request for approval to SPL/JK.

Snub-nosed dogs

For this type of dog a kennel is compulsory that is one size larger than normally required. This is because these dogs are susceptible to an increased risk of breathing problems when exposed to stress. Travelling in a larger kennel reduces the risk of breathing problems.
